In this project we described our Hawaiian hero's day/week. My Hawaiian hero was Daniel Inouye, and I chose him because of his perseverance and bravery in the spite of danger and racism. The goals I had for this was to see in the eyes of of my hero and look at his life to gather information on his life/day. I told the story of how his arm was severed, and how he got elected, and that really inspired me to write about that time in his life.
I chose this work sample, because I think it really reflects my ability to write in first person view, which supports my endurance when writing and how I've improved a lot with my skills. Another reason I chose this work sample was because I liked how unique my writing style was when completing this. I enjoyed making this art because the writing muscles in my brain were exercised!
So the 21st century skill that relates closest to this project, is Thinking and problem solving. I chose this skill because when I was writing this paper, I had to dig deep and research how Daniel Inouye felt when he was in the war, and how he felt in office as well as his personal life. This assignment essentially demonstrates a short story of how Daniel Persevered and felt as we walked through his life and this shows how I used my thoughts to come up with the way he felt during the hard times he went through.
This project shows my personal growth by the way I planned out how I wrote it. First I gathered information on Daniel Inouye and found out where he was and how he felt in that scenario. Second I applied this to my personal thoughts and the essay kind of just flowed out of me, and I evaluated my first few paragraphs. And lastly I proofread and completed my work of art where half of the information is fact based, and the other half is my opinion on how he felt during the situation (with the exception of his quotes on it).
If I could improve anything about this project, I probably would have made it a bit longer, but also done a little more research to boil down all the core ideas and thoughts from Inouye, instead of just going off of my head. When I made this I did feel pretty accomplished, but I guess there is always room for improvement. So in conclusion, this project was fun to do and It gave me an opportunity to express my 1st person writing skills!
Essay:
It’s day 37 of the brigade. I’ve been sieging the Germans with shell after shell and the sounds get worse after every firing. The ringing in my ears has turned my senses numb, but perseverance and braveness always have my back. Yesterday I led the 442nd regiment to a success, but with the cost of major injury to my arm. They mentioned it’s infected and they may amputate it. I am not afraid, and I remain calm in these difficult times. I pray to god to bring safety to my family, and if I must live without an arm I must subside.
As I lay in my hospital bed after my surgery I can’t help but feel alone. I am being discriminated against for my race and hospitalized after a serious injury. Last night they proceeded to cut off my arm and I felt a strange sense of peace, even though an average man may feel exponentially nervous. I think the reason may lie in my hope to bring equality for japanese-americans and maybe even create some politics out of it. Who knows? Maybe I’ll be running for senate in 6 years.
I just got home after being in the hospital for 3 months and it was terrible. The food was actually decent, but the service was terrible and they checked on me once every 6 hours! Anyway, I’ve made a decision to apply to a college and get a business degree, or maybe even a law degree if it works out. After all, I lost one arm and I was in the military so maybe the people will sympathize me. Going to college with one arm might be difficult because I lost my right arm, but I’m sure it won’t be too hard learning to write with my left hand.
After college I was able to run for representative of Hawaii and win! And I was right (get it) about my left hand because I learned to do all kinds of cool things with my left hand. Being impaired has taught me a lot about the hardships of life and the struggles of losing something almost vital to you. But I persevered as anyone should when they feel discouraged. Aloha!
