For this work sample we created an essay on a book we read. I chose this because it was a big project and I spent a good amount of time on it. This sample represents the first 21st century skill; Information skills. After I wrote this essay it made me think a lot about the topic and how it applies to me in my life. It also taught me some things I didn't know and I can grow on those things.

The Hate U Give
This will be a summary of The Hate U give book. This book starts with an average teenager named Starr Carter. She attends a party and feels out of place. There, she runs into an old friend named Khalil. She thinks that Khalil may be using or selling drugs. Then there are gunshots and Khalil and Starr run to the car. After a mild conversation the police pull them over and Khalil wants to know why they stopped him. A cop referred to as one-fifteen tells them not to move. Then when Khalil goes to open the door the cop shoots him.
Starr tries to risk speaking up about police brutality but is unable to Mr. Lewis the town barber accuses Khalil of his own murder and says he brought to himself by handling drugs. Starr also has a boyfriend that is white, but knows Maverick (her father) would not approve. After having nightmares, she remembers the death of a friend Natasha and mourns her.
Starr meets a racist person named Hailey who is against the black minority and also her supposed friend. Then she goes to Khalil's funeral and explains how seven was born. After that she feels worse and worse about Hailey and explains Hailey tries to make her look like the bad guy. Suddenly at dinner there are gunshots and they see on tv the protests of Khalil's death and the police throwing tear gas at them. Then in chapter 9 Starr and Seven go to play basketball when they run into the king lord, DeVante.
In chapter 10 we find out that Hailey is protesting Khalil’s death only to get out of school. Of course Starr is outraged, but Hailey ignores her anger. Later, Hailey, Maya, and Starr hang out and watch tv and suddenly one-fifteens starts talking about the incident, and how he thought Khalil had a gun in the car with him. A lot of drama happens and Starr ends up in court. Ms. Ofrah says Starr has a future in activism. Starr vows to never forget Khalil and avenge him, and protest police brutality.
Themes of the book
One theme of this book is something you can find when Khalil is shot. This is called police brutality and can be found in many places throughout the book. This subject has been protested all over America and in many other places. Currently we are facing one of the biggest and most treacherous protests in modern history.
Another theme I noticed was the amount of racism and anti-racism that can be found in the book. And in the book Hailey repents for her racism but also takes it back later in the book. Starr is infuriated by the single joke that Hailey throws out, and it shows how much impact just a little tease can have on a person.
What brings me to believe this is a good book is the amount of sheer symbolic situations the characters face. For example, Starr’s hairbrush shows what police officers might think is a gun is really not and brings us to the main theme of the book, racism. And by most symbolic terms in the book it is mainly about racism or the shooting of Khalil.
The last theme in this book I will talk about is the poverty among the black community. The neighborhood Starr lives in is seen as very ghetto and intimidating. But as we go further in the book we see certain parts are in fact intimidating but others are very kind as well and deserve better. After reading this book I understand the amount of poverty and hardships black communities go through and I hope there will be change soon.
